Terror for daily consumption has become the sad experience of the most military ready nation of the world. In reprisals, USA is making Afghanistan to taste terror and uncertainty, the daily bread of Afghans, even at the hand of their own Taleban. Vengeance belongs to us, is what America is saying and doing, making it difficult for pro-American Islamic nations. “Will this produce 1000 more Bin Ladens?”, should be America’s worry. We in Sri Lanka, have been blaming one the other for our ills. All our ills cannot be fathered on colonial rule, seeing that in 1948, we were the leading economic power of Asia. Our Universities, health and judicial system were the envy of other Asian nations. Our present problems are not merely economic or political. Abortions are over one thousand a day and the per capita abortion rate is higher than Germany, the highest in Europe. Incest is common and 90% of child sex abuse happens in the home by a relative, often the father. Suicide is one death every hour. Five more attempt and thankfully fail. Road traffic accidents claim a victim every four hours. Alcohol consumption beats developed nations when rated to GDP & population. All these are not problems caused by politicians though they have contributed their share. If we have the perfect economic utopia, will we live happily ever after? You already know the answer.
Most analysts only tear down someone else for our woes. Most academics of any discipline – arts, sciences, medicine, law, would still opt to go to the west for scholarships, post-graduate studies and Sabbaticals. Yet the west is the pet whipping boy of those who have greatly benefited form western education. Gruesome massacres in the East have proven that we are no better morally to sit in judgement over the west. While we castigate the imperialistic west, justice and fair play extended one to another, even on our roads, is rare. Tarring the west will not make us whiter. I am not holding a candle to the post-Christian west. They have thrown out the Biblical values that built their nations. Their schools are no more safe; any child could go on a killing spree. This alone is causing come states to consider re-introducing prayer in the schools, which was outlawed by the agitation of the American Civil Liberties Union.
